The suburban town of Barkingside sits 3 miles north of Ilford Town. Before being included in the Borough of Redbridge in 1965, Barkingside was a part of the county of Essex. Its history is marked by the Holy Trinity Church set up in 1840 and the Barnardo chapel and Barnardo children’s charity founded in 1866. The urban development of the area was accelerated by the arrival of the Great Eastern Railway in 1903. The current Barkingside Tube station was inaugurated then as part of the GER branch line running from Woodford to Ilford via Hainault. It was shut down temporarily due to World War I from May 1916 until July 1919. Following the 1921 Railways Act, the Great Eastern Railway became part of the London & North Eastern Railway and part of the Central Line in 1948.

Barkingside High Street benefitted from multi-million-pound investments made by London authorities for its regeneration.
The plans put in place by the office of the Mayor of London and Redbridge Council revamped the Fullwell Cross Library and leisure centre located at the end of High Street. Investments included the creation of a new public square in front of the leisure centre and new pedestrian routes.
Massive investments were also made toward improving shopfronts. Sums of up to £100,000 were allocated for these investments, as well as up to £50,000 for the new town square public art.
The regeneration scheme also included the revival of the annual Fairlop Fair at Fairlop Waters Country Park. This community event attracts thousands of visitors who enjoy traditional games, live music and dance, pet shows, fortune tellers, and fire-eaters. The local community also celebrates Light Night, when the town square is decorated with colourful lighting and filled with food vendors, live music, and an open-air cinema.
