Woodford Historic Buildings
There are several historic buildings in Woodford that pay a wonderful tribute to its past. Among them is the Eagle hotel, Wanstead’s oldest inn dating back to the 17th century. And the original parish church of St. Mary. There is also the Merchant Seamen’s orphan asylum in Hermon Hill dating back to 1861, which is now Wanstead Hospital.
Another landmark building is the Crown Court in Eagle Pond at Snaresbrook. It was built in 1841 and used as an orphanage. Later, it became the Royal National Children’s Foundation, and in 1938, it became the Royal Wanstead School. In April 1965, it was converted into a court. Today, it is the busiest Crown Court in the UK.
