Full All-Access Guide To Living in Walthamstow
A Cool and Chic Suburban District that Does Won’t Disappoint Even the Harshest Critics
If there is one thing that can be said about Walthamstow it’s that it’s packed with personality. It’s a quiet suburban area that prides itself in hosting and promoting the London movement of alternative culture. It is home to numerous art galleries and unconventional, modern art exhibitions plus the famous God’s Own Junkyard – a funky eclectic store legendary for its collections of neon and light art.
Still, that’s far from all Walthamstow has to offer. There are several reasons why it has become so attractive to a growing number of new residents in recent years. With easy access to the London Underground and the London Overground, Walthamstow is a great alternative to more expensive Zone 1 and 2 areas. Its great access to and from most major London areas is topped only by its affordability in terms of property and living costs.
High-ranked schools, good amenities, and the longest market in Europe are also found here. Add all of this up and there is no way Walthamstow can be seen as anything other than a great, up-and-coming area to live in London. The district is a great blend of very diverse races and cultures and has a hip and trendy community feel while still maintaining its traditional charm.
Walthamstow is located in the London Borough of Waltham Forest, in Greater London, only 7.5 miles north-east from Charing Cross. It is bordered by the Lee Valley Reservoir Chain and the Walthamstow Marshes and offers many entertainment and outdoor activities to its residents. What’s more is that green spaces are not only available in public areas. Walthamstow is one of the few London areas where you can get a home with its own private garden.
Walthamstow’s recent gentrification has its roots in the development projects relating to the 2012 Olympics. Since then, several areas such as Lloyd Park have been renovated and restored and interest in more than just the area around Walthamstow Village has soared. Its development is extending to include several formerly forgotten corners and turn them into modern havens. Walthamstow is now seen as a serious competitor for other trendy London hotspots like Shoreditch. So, it’s no wonder that property prices here have seen an increase of over 20% since 2013. Plus, the local demographic has gotten younger and younger over recent years.

The market is open five days a week from Tuesday to Saturday, with Saturdays recording the most foot traffic. The Town Square hosts a farmers’ market on Sunday mornings and a Saturday French market occasionally.
There are about 500 vendor stalls in the market. They offer a wide range of products such as food, furniture, clothes, and antiques. There are also many cafes, bars, and restaurants in the area, as well as larger supermarkets.
Among the specialties you can find here there are several varieties of ethnic foods (from Polish to Russian, Indian, and South Asian), special fabrics, pies and mashes, and jellied eels.

It is organized in Lloyd Park and it is the largest community festival in the district. The festival features concerts, artistic performances, and activities such as arts and crafts.
