In 1381, Mile End was the scene of a peasant uprising, namely the Peasant’s Revolt of 1381. At that time, it was where the 100,000 Essex rebels marching against the tax collectors camped and where they were met by King Richard II to have their charter signed.
The Second World War bombings did not spare Mile End. It was severely damaged by raids but later rebuilt to its former self.
The local community benefits from the support of the Mile End Community Project since 1995. This project was started and funded by community members to compensate for the lack of services in the Mile End area with a goal to encourage positive outlooks for young local residents.
The Community Project uses their team’s skills to create a fun environment where local children and teenagers can creatively express themselves. Opportunities include the production of films and film projects and a range of social and educational activities. All of them focus on creativity, art, and media.
